about-the-shala
Bhakti Yoga Shala is a west coast bhakti yoga/spiritual community, known worldwide for its devotional programming. After serving Santa Monica for 11 years in person, BYS became an online-only studio in 2020. This has allowed BYS to better serve the global community. Memberships to our online studio help support the Shala. The Shala is directed by husband-wife team Govind Das and Jacqueline, who aim to spread the practice of bhakti around the world. At the Shala, we follow the teachings of the great saint Neem Karoli Baba, who celebrated all Gods as one. Anyone and everyone is welcome, and we are happy to serve you on your spiritual journey.

In his freshman year of college, in 1989, Govind Das was introduced to the practice of meditation and the spiritual culture of the east. A few years later, while on a road trip, G listened to a Ram Dass lecture. This cassette tape changed the course of his life. Govind Das has since dedicated his life to studying and sharing the practices of bhakti yoga.

 

Jacqueline

Visiting Bali as a child, Jacqueline remembers going to temples and seeing the altars in front of the shops. When she moved from Australia to LA, she met Govind Das and was introduced to bhakti and kirtan. She is grateful to have found this heart-opening and transformative practice and to be able to share it with others.

KIRTAN VINYASA

A Bhakti Yoga Shala signature class! Kirtan Vinyasa fuses Bhakti Vinyasa and kirtan; Chant while holding different postures, dance, and feel your heart burst wide open!

BHAKTI VINYASA

A strengthening, purifying, soulful, devotional, and rejuvenating physical yoga practice fusing hatha vinyasa yoga and bhakti (gratitude, open-heartedness, humility, compassion, and devotion).

KIRTAN

Kirtan is an ancient bhakti yoga practice using chanting, mantra, and music as an expression of our devotion and heartfelt prayer.

MEDITATION

A devotional practice using a variety of techniques like mindfulness, mantra, breath observation, and visualization, directed toward our own unique remembrance of the Divine.

YIN + RESTORATIVE

Hold simple yoga postures while supporting your body with props to stretch and relax your body and nervous system. Many classes in this category are accompanied by live sound healing.

SLOW FLOW

A slower mindful movement practice using postures from hatha yoga with bhakti yoga woven throughout. Postures have longer holds than Bhakti Vinyasa.

PRANAYAMA

Breath is life. Pranayama is yogic breathwork to ground, balance, energize, and rejuvenate our bodies and reset our nervous systems.

SOUND HEALING

Sound healing provides a healing experience to leave you feeling centered, re-calibrated, and recharged using Quartz Crystal bowls, gongs, mantra, and other magical instruments.

DHARMA TALKS

The ancient teachings within the yogic tradition provide us great inspiration for living from the heart in our modern times.

KIDS YOGA

Classes for your child to develop the foundations for a life of mindfulness using simple yoga poses, breathing, meditation, and song.
